Welcome to the “Self-Organization of Biological Systems” laboratory. We are a multidisciplinary research group located at the Andalusian Center for Developmental Biology in Seville. Our vision is that the development of organisms is a complex multiscale process where self-organization at the cellular, tissue, and organ level interact synergistically to form a unified whole as proposed by J.C. Smuts.

Over the past decade, our work (Marcon and Sharpe Curr. Opin. Genet. Dev. 2012, Serrano, Raspopovic and Marcon Stem Cell Rep. 2021), has highlighted the remarkable capacity of cells to self-organize independently of external signals. Inspired by the pioneering work of Alan Turing and C.H. Waddignton, our primary goal is to decipher the mechanisms behind symmetry-breaking and the formation of the three germ layers during early embryonic development. We do so by using an integrative approach that combines Lightsheet microscopy, Single Cell RNA Sequencing, high-throughput screenings and modeling.
